Gilles Carle died yesterday at eighty years old. He was one of Quebec’s most talented filmmakers, and has earned international respects, notably at Cannes film festival where he was nominated four times, and won once for his short film 50 ans (1989). His films often skirt a very fine line between satire and exploitation, but are always interesting. He is probably best known for putting any of his current love interests in the lead roles of his films, including the beautiful and acclaimed Carole Laure. If you’ve never seen any of his films, this is a good time to seek him out, though I am not sure how available his films are outside of Quebec… hell, they’re not easy to get your hands on here.
